Mobile needs to help the emergency services.

It has been an interesting week from a business perspective but every now and again events happen that make you consider if you could be doing more to assist the community. Yesterday whilst driving to a meeting I was flagged down by a elderly gentleman. I stopped only to discover the poor gentleman's passenger had collapsed and he needed help.

I am not an expert paramedic or anything like that but I know the basics.  The major problem was I didnt know where I was. When calling 999 from my Android phone it took ten minutes of negotiation with the emergency services as to my location. After 20 minutes of performing CPR the ambulance people arrived. Unfortunately the poor man passed away.

It has left me thinking why didnt my phone automatically activate the GPS and send my location to the emergency services. It probably doesnt because there is no commercial angle to the service, the technology exists. Surely we all have a responsibility to do all we can to help in these situations. I know in the US operators are supposed to force GPS into phones but in the UK there is no such rule.

I suspect it is time someone took the bull by the horns and set this service up. In fact I will set it up - if the network operators agree to make their phones log the GPS position when an emergency call is made I will provide the systems.
