Android 2.2 Finally Reached 50% Penetration

January 9th, 2011 21:36

With more than 40% of all smartphones shipments in the U.S. being an Android device, the penetration rate of Android 2.2 exceeded 50% over the holiday period. Early December we wrote that Android 2.2 was the O.S. on 43.4% of all Android phones, which comes down to an increase of 8.4% to 51.8% over just one month. In the graph below are the percentages of each individual version stated and the percentage of devices running 1.x will, with current salesvolumes, most likely decline to below 10% in January.

Android 2.2 penetration, January 4, 2010
Note that these percentages are based on Android devices that have accessed Android Market within a 14-day period ending on January 4, 2010. Because new devices owners will be more likely to enter the Android Market the numbers will (slightly) deviate from the actual ownership.
