Do U Understand Generation Y?

Generation Y is tech savvy!

Ok, so maybe it’s no surprise that the generation also known as the Millennial Generation, Generation Next, and the Net Generation, is a bunch of techies. But there are some new numbers out that shed light on Generation Y.

According to The Kiplinger Letter, a weekly business and economic forecasting periodical, Generation Y will reshape workplaces and marketplaces for decades to come because of its familiarity with technology. Generation Y is about 77-million strong. Born between 1981 and 1999, Millennials make up ¼ of the U.S. population.

Here’s what The Kiplinger Letter reported about Gen Y’s tech habits:

•   90% use the Internet
•   75% use social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter
•   60% access the web wirelessly on-the-go
•   83% keep their cell phone nearby, even when asleep
•   40% don’t even have a landline

When it comes to home ownership, about 1/3 of Gen Yers between the ages of 18 and 32-year-olds are already homeowners. Gen Y often buys smaller homes and on smaller lots than typical. While most seem to be settling in the suburbs, most Gen Yers still want to be able to walk to restaurants, shops or other attractions.

Kiplinger’s findings seem spot on to me. Let me introduce myself. I’m Shelly. I’m Gen Y. I have separation anxiety when my phone isn’t within reach. I don’t have a landline and never will. The only “phone book” I have is my contacts list on my phone. My phone alerts me when I have a Facebook or Twitter update. Even when I’m on the run, I check in on FourSquare. I’m a new homeowner (a condo – just the right size).  I used Smarter Agent’s app to find new neighborhoods, and I continue to use Smarter Agent to see what homes around me are selling for. A data plan and unlimited text messages are a must. I love technology, and I’m excited to see what’s to come in my lifetime.
