As a visual artist, the mobile device presents some interesting challenges. Screen size is always an issue. People will ultimately look at your art work from an arm's distance. As an example the iPhone4 is 960 x 400, Evo 4.3 (800x480), Blackberry 480x360. To complicate matters 30% of the public needs reading glasses.
Creating a one-size-fits-all file can be a tricky matter. Whether you are talking game, app or video. The only way to get the results that you are seeking is to customize for each platform. In reality, creating for a phone is like drawing a cartoon for the newspaper. It is smaller than you would like, but it's possible to do something significant if you put your mind to it.
The screen on an iPhone4 or HTC Evo is rich in color fully capable of displaying even 3D art impressively and accurately. The "Angry Birds" iPhone app, uses expressive 2D characters that jump off the phone, "Real Racing" cool 3D. On the flip side is "Doodle Jump", it is simple but really cute. The designers of these games worked the details, I applaud.
As a mobile video creator the venue has to be considered, the screen is a little bigger than a credit card. Small details in the distance will be lost, over use of color will offend the eye. The idea is to make a functional piece of digital art that enhances the mobile experience.
Creating for tablets is the new frontier. iPads are 1024X768, HP Slate 10-inch, Samsung Galaxy 7-inch and Dell Mini 5-inch. Delivering content that works well on each size will prove to be illusive. Speaking of which, Flash content is the easiest format to scale. Android based devices will be Flash happy. iPads will not. This puts the app creator in the position of having to have to make two versions, Apple and Android.
Video is a different story. It appears HD format is the new standard. Even if your screen is small, it will definitely be wide. The iPhone5 will have a dual-core A5 chip. This will make the app gods happy and over-joy your retinas. Hopefully the battery can handle the load and play a two hour movie.
As a content creator format definitely effects the overall design. Serious thought has to be applied to each screen size to appeal to each device buyer.
So what's the perfect mobile screen size? It's whatever you've got in your hand.
